NICKEL CITY OPERA AND THE BUFFALO ACADEMY FOR VISUAL AND
PERFORMING ARTS FORM PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM

Buffalo, NY – Valerian Ruminski, Artistic Director and Founder of Nickel City Opera has created a partnership program with students from the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts to promote opera in Western New York. They will have the opportunity to attend the NCO production of ‘The Barber of Seville’, June 26th and June 28th at The Riviera Theatre. “As a Buffalo arts organization we have the responsibility to include the youth of our community as they are the future of the arts in WNY.   I come from a poor background and I would not be a singer at the Metropolitan Opera if certain charitable acts had not been extended to me. There are kids out there who may never have the opportunity to see an opera and we hope we can forge the way for the next generation of budding opera lovers and performers.”

Music Faculty at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, will select students to study The Barber of Seville as part of their curriculum and then attend an NCO performance of the work. Opera patrons may wish to become a Student Sponsor by purchasing an extra student ticket when selecting their own tickets to a performance. These tickets in turn will be made available to Arts Academy students free of charge as an innovative way to share in shaping Western New York’s next generation of opera lovers.

How NCO Started
When The Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, NY received a grant from Governor Pataki, director Frank Cannata aspired to bring opera to the majestic theatre. He recalled an article from The Buffalo News quoting Valerian Ruminski regarding the future of opera in WNY in which he had looked to the landmark movie house as a potential base for his Nickel City Opera company. Due to its beauty, space and the acoustics of a European opera house, it seemed to Mr. Cannata a perfect fit and a partnership was formed.

The production is a partnership of The Eastern Festival Symphony Orchestra of Westchester, NY and the opera repertory company Ottawa Pocket Opera from Ottawa, Ontario.
